My studio is located in Boulder, Colorado. It includes a painting space and a separate printmaking space. Foolproof Contemporary in Denver, CO represents my work.
I grew up on a beautiful piece of land in Connecticut that belonged to two of my three artist great-grandparents. Land, water, architecture and art inspired me.
In graduate school, I began painting interiors of older architecture with a contemporary sensibility. My work has always been based in observation and narrative. It changes as my life and art experiences change. In 2012, I had a solo show of thirty-two oil paintings called “Water Nymphs” with imagery of water and figures playing and contemplating in water.
Shortly, thereafter, I worked with four different master printers and my work went in new directions. Monotypes and monoprints felt spontaneous and playful to me. Painting is often employed in my printmaking. I combine the two and I move between the two. I have a painting studio as well as a small printing studio so I can work between the two.
I like to tell and invent stories as an entry point. Printmaking allowed my narrative to become more invented and playful. After visiting the Acropolis Museum, I was inspired to create my own version of the evolution story, beginning with plants.
My recent paintings have been somewhat biographical. From my early interiors to now, I still incorporate influences of other artists. There are reoccurring themes and proclivities in my work and I am a life-long learner, who likes to keep exploring.

About the ArtistYour Tour Guide
Linda Lowry
I have an MFA in Painting and Drawing from UC, B. I have been a professional artist and taught college art over twenty years. My work is based in observation and painting is part of most of my processes. For 25 years, I painted interiors on location as portraits of their inhabitants. A shift began with my solo painting show at Goodwin Fine Art, in 2012, called Water Nymphs. My subject was an exploration of humans interacting with and contemplating water. I returned to my childhood of growing up in and on the water. After this three year effort, I had the good fortune to work with 4 master printmakers and found several new ways to express myself.
A printmaking residency in Greece lead me to the Acropolis Museum where, I was struck by the story of mankind in bas relief. I began to tell my own story of evolution by inventing images with stencils and watercolor monotype. The pandemic lead me to my garden and documentaries about climate change and the importance of the microbiome in soil. My work shifted to an invented narrative of plant evolution with watercolor and oil monotypes.
I found the repetitive structures that I was creating with soothing. The pieces became experiments in color and composition. Gardening, composting, studying the importance of the microbiome and making these images were all inter-connected and helped diminish my anxiety about the issues of 2020.The micro-biome images are truly about interconnectedness. I have a new appreciation for diversity, food scraps and a plethora of insects.
You may notice a sense of being underwater in the large pieces which stems from my lifelong connection to water, in it, on it and powerfully drawn to it. It is another fundamental restorative source in my life and my work.
Currently I have three subjects in process, including the Carousel of Happiness, Nantucket: past and present, travels in Puglia. Many of my subjects cross time. They involve the present and the history/the stories behind the places that I am drawn to paint.
I make, exhibit and sell my work. I continue to teach painting and mixed media workshops.
