My so called “studio” for art in the past has always been where ever I could manage to find the space, usually encroaching into all aspects of life. Whether a random corner of a room in a cramped apartment or the living room coffee table of a slightly bigger condo, when a project needed doing, it was done any way possible. My studio was wherever I was.
Moving to Saint Louis has finally afforded me the opportunity to setup my own personal space dedicated to not only my illustrative endeavors, but to all other creative projects that peak my fancy. Surrounded by the art, books, and music that inspire me, it may just be a spare bedroom in a basement, but it’s my personal creative sanctuary. It’s my “studio.”

About the ArtistYour Tour Guide
Colan Simpson
My work is typically the result of a client's specific request or a form of entertaining myself. A childhood of my head buried in comic books and various Sci-Fi/Fantasy film "Art of" books has informed my style and approach to my work. I was also surrounded by numerous artists in my family's close circle of friends growing up and was taught the basics of watercolor and acrylic painting at a young age. I studied Illustration at the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design focusing more on the commercial Illustration and Design world and its processes.
While I did not pursue a career full time in commercial art, I still do the odd freelance projects here and there to fulfill the creative itch that still persists within. Working in the Craft Brewing Industry has afforded me the opportunity to connect with and design labels and merchandise for various independent breweries on a freelance basis. I also accept private commissions for portraits, tattoo designs, and a multitude of other subject matter. When I work on art for myself it is typically portrait work or silly little cartoon doodles that have never left my system.
