I have two studios at my home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Which one you’ll find me in depends on the season. Summers find me, with the quail, rabbits and roadrunners, in my open-air Quonset hut in the back yard. There, I paint with melted beeswax and pigments in a process known as encaustic. I also have created two easels attached to the steel walls with magnets where I work on cold wax medium and oil paintings. This way I can chase the light around the building throughout the day. This summer I plan to add skylights and electricity in the hope that the space will be available more months out of the year.
In winter, I retreat to my small bedroom studio where I paint, print photographs, make digital art and create smaller pieces on paper or panel.

About the ArtistYour Tour Guide
Carol Mell
Carol Mell grew up in wild Oregon where she played in a natural world of imagination; where trees, sturgeon, squirrels and whales spoke. In a twist of fate, she earned a BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School. Now living in New Mexico, her creative journey through writing and photography now extends into the realm of beeswax and oils. She has also developed an extensive mobile artistry practice using today’s fabulous apps. Her digital images are printed, mounted on panel, covered with beeswax and resin and finished with texturing and oils. Other paintings are intuitive and emerge as she paints with either hot or cold wax. Her unique paintings represent perfect hours in the sun and rain in a world created for healing and joy. She exhorts her fans, collectors and friends to “Follow the Dirt Road in Your Soul.”
