My approach to the making of art takes as its point of origin the awareness that I am about to do something which is unexpected and undiscovered until it reveals itself to me. This is my way of being reminded that my creative voice is unique and no one else can speak for me.
My perspective as an artist is grounded in my ethnic heritage (Finnish), my religious vocation, and a whimsical view of the world. Sisu, the Finnish expression which loosely translates as “tenacity with purpose,” helps me to keep approaching art with a determined gaze. My religious vocation has opened my awareness of and participation in the wider world. Given the serious side of my background and occupation it is important for me to apply a feeling of joy to my work. Sisu, religion, and whimsy – this is who I am and why I am able to make art as I do.

Rev. Dr. Charles Alkula
Charles Alkula, a native of Ohio, now calls Boulder, Colorado home. His artistic interest was late in coming following many years moving around the world with work and educational pursuits. He completed a BFA at the University of Montana – Missoula in 2018 where his work shifted from a multi-disciplinary approach to now being done almost exclusively in the painting studio.
Charles’ process involves setting up “systems,” means of engaging the paint by allowing the paint to mix itself and to create works often distanced from the initial concept. This process appears to be haphazard, but it requires a myriad of steps on his part. His work incorporates his life experiences, a sense of humor, and a strong sense of “What if…” By engaging in a “structured chaos” approach to his art, he brings to life that which appears random, but which has great meaning. His work is typically done on wood (when encaustic / wax is employed) and on canvas otherwise. Charles uses both acrylic and oils, often on the same piece, drawing out the potential of colors not found when mixed with intention.
His artistic output has been exhibited in galleries in Laguna Beach, California, Boulder, Colorado, Lakewood, Colorado, Missoula, Montana, and Washington, DC.
