The creation of these pieces originates from a sense of play and being untethered to a specific outcome. Frederick Froebel’s premise as the creator of the concept of kindergarten is that free activity and the impulse to explore is motivated by intellectual curiosity. It’s through making, making and more making, that the learning of our capabilities and limitations evolves.
I enjoy working with porcelain for it’s pure aesthetic. It’s like beginning a project with a white sheet of paper, a very flimsy piece of paper. It’s smooth texture is satisfying and impressionable to the touch. Working in clay, and particularly porcelain slip, demands that I understand it’s fragile qualities and unique potential. It has a memory and innate characteristics that can’t be controlled. Once we appreciate the boundaries, we can explore more deeply within them.
Creating these forms takes on a rhythm and meditation. The strength of multiples is intriguing: separate pieces are united to create a cohesive new individual form. In turn, these abstract forms are about the potential for infinite interpretations.
