I’m drawn to the mark of the hand in any work of art–evidence of adjustments and traces left behind. My landscape-inspired pieces are about the movement of the land, erosion, and fragmentation, geological strata, the “stone-ness” of stone. On a subliminal level they have to do with the elemental forces of nature, memory, and the passage of time. In other pieces I’m working with the idea of the resolution of opposites–a juxtaposition of negative space with complex, more textural spaces and the ongoing conflict between order and chaos. In terms of process, the content or concept dictates the media used. I seem to work in “chunks”, i.e. seemingly random experimentation, a wide variety of materials, surfaces, and sizes, for a long period of time–finally pulling a coherent body of work together after a period of years. Over a 60 year period, I have often returned to figurative work, and continue to do so. I had worked in a group studio for many (at least 40) years and am now working from my home studio–which has both positive and negative aspects, lots of space and quiet, but too solitary. So– I welcome visitors!

About the ArtistYour Tour Guide
Karen Poulson
I've lived in Colorado for almost 60 years now. During that period I've been painting and exhibiting both in Colorado and throughout the U.S.* My studies in anthropology led to an interest in prehistory and the marks and remnants left by previous generations, connecting past to present. That interest has remained constant to this day and continues to influence all of my work.
