The universe is a moving, spinning place ….. I have always been drawn to things that conveyed this energy. As a university student focusing on kinetic sculpture, as a filmmaker and now as a painter, this kinetic energy is central to my work. I build up layers of paint, combine metallic elements and play them off against hard edged graphics to keep this movement alive in a dynamic built on contrast and juxtaposition.
My process
Is it a painting or a sculpture? ….. maybe both!
The methods of sawing, sanding and building, would say sculpture. While applying paint with a brush would say painting. Perhaps it’s a flat sculpture. The process, which I refer to as “Elemental Reduction” involves the application of multiple layers of paint which is gradually removed by sanding. This removal creates both subtle shading and bold marks ….there’s a fair amount of mystery. After a layer of paint is applied and sanded, a clear coat is applied which protects the painted areas and gives depth to the piece. Often there will be six to eight clear coats before the painting is completed.
Each painting is abstract in nature but with a but with a structural base, forming a combination of non-objective shapes with hard edged elements that wrap around the sides of the piece.
In the final phase, more clear layers are added and the whole surface is buffed out so the surface is less reflective and subtle. The resulting finish is like an old piece of lacquered furniture …nice to the touch and very durable ….it’s a process of turning simple materials into something unexpected an elegant.

William Snider
I actually was a fine arts major at the University of Colorado. After graduation, and living in Denver and later Aspen, I was on a pretty good trajectory for doing sculpture work .... mostly kinetic pieces. At one point I became involved in a short film project, and that morphed into a 30 year career in the film and television world. I guess one could say that I went from kinetic sculpture to kinetic images. Thirty years of looking through a camera lens can stockpile a lot of images. Those images, in a more abstract form, started to pour out once I hung up my camera. The work I'm doing now is a reflection of that moving world .... I also like the idea of a painting having some entertainment value
