About the ArtistYour Tour Guide
Bryan Goldfeder aka BGOLD
Bryan Goldfeder is an artist and educator in the modern glass movement. As the owner and caretaker of BGOLD Glass, he has been developing and implementing approaches to a sustainable "Permaculture glass" studio practice, along with sharing his ergonomic body-focused technical method of working glass with students from around the world.
Bryan also focuses deeply on art activism with his functional work, installations, and ritual Judaica. His philosophy centers around Mindful Materialism, a practice of bringing intention into the things we buy and consume. Bryan strives to tell the stories of his art, bring awareness to the resources and energy that go into its creation, and to take a multifaceted approach of building connection points between viewer and piece.
Since 2019, Bryan has been hosting CU Boulder interns from a cross-disciplinary class which brings artists and engineers together to learn about how their expertise can relate to artistic fabrication. In 2021, BGOLD became part of the University of Colorado's first Art + Science + Action Cohort which brings together artists from the community with scientists from the university to address relevant environmental and social issues. Under this call, Bryan has deepened his art activism and work around both Boulder's apple tree community and the impending space debris catastrophe. Art and science are two sides of the same coin, and by exploring issues more holistically, we can come closer to communicating and activating the change needed.
Currently, Bryan is practicing the Jewish Shmita year in his life and studio. Shmita, which literally means "release," is a Jewish land focused practice that happens every 7th year and is also known as a sabbatical. Its set of rules and ideas has historically been focused on an agrarian earth based society, and is now being reinterpretted for a modern earth (dis)connected world. Shmita is a time to let the land lie fallow, so BGOLD Glass studio has stepped away from continuous economic growth, using the time to "release" and rewild the glass art "farm." This sabbatical has opened up some space for Bryan to guest teach at other studios, such as the Colorado School of Mines and Pilchuck Glass School, as well as play more music and vision on larger goals. As an environmentalist melting down heavy metals with fossil fuels, Bryan continues to find ways to bring intention, meaning, and balance to his glass art practice and the larger creative communities.
