As a fine art major, I came to understand that all art is a means of communication.
That said I have struggled to find my voice for my experiences. I think all artists do. And we paint different things during differing periods of our life.
What I have learned is that I enjoy the process: trying new materials, mixed media, manipulating the flow of water based media, making textures implied or real, collage, painting on location or from past experience. I observe, collect, photograph, and sketch…percolating is part of the process.

Darleene Nelson
While raising a family in Grand Rapids, Mi, I continued my art education with night classes at GRCC and watercolor workshops. For several years I painted in the basement laundry on a door over two sawhorses, and competed in West Michigan juried shows from 1983-2003. I was trained as an art docent for my children’s school by the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM).
The instruction at GRAM and the classes at Grand Rapids Community College were intellectually stimulating. Finally as a non-traditional age student, I chose to finished a BFA at Aquinas College. Then I gave three years as an in-house docent for GRAM.
I currently have works in the permanent collections of: University of Michigan-Dearborn, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Valley State University, and Grand Rapids Community College.
